In a commendable achievement, staff and inmates at Timehri Prison have marked significant success in their tilapia harvesting initiative. A bountiful harvest of 200 pounds was accomplished last Sunday, contributing to the self-sustaining food supply program within the prison.

The Guyana Prison Service (GPS) initiated an aquaculture project last year at the Timehri Prison location, focusing on the rearing of red tilapia. The Satyadeo Sawh Aquaculture Station is in charge of this pilot project, which demonstrates the prison’s dedication to investigating cutting-edge rehabilitation techniques.
Director of Prisons, Nicklon Elliot, expressed satisfaction with the project’s success, highlighting its role in extending rehabilitation efforts and providing inmates with opportunities to develop and discover their skills and talents. The tilapia harvesting program aligns with the GPS’s broader initiative to enhance self-sufficiency in food production within the prison system.
Assistant Superintendent of Prisons, Roddy Denhart, emphasized that beyond contributing to the prison’s self-sustaining food-supply program, the tilapia project serves as a valuable tool for inmate rehabilitation. By engaging in such initiatives, the GPS aims to equip inmates with practical skills that can contribute to their personal development and potential reintegration into society.
The success of the tilapia harvesting program at Timehri Prison not only signifies a positive step toward food sustainability but also underscores the GPS’s commitment to holistic inmate rehabilitation and skill development.
