Berbice, Guyana — Shane Samaroo, known as “Travis Cortis,” has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for the killing of Faroze “Eggy” Khan, following a violent attack on August 19, 2021. Justice Sandil Kissoon handed down the sentence at the Berbice High Court.

According to the case facts, Khan was passing a grocery store at Bennet Dam, Rosignol, when Samaroo confronted him. Armed with a piece of wood, Samaroo struck Khan, knocking him to the ground. He then stabbed him with a knife. A post-mortem examination confirmed Khan’s death was caused by a stab wound that punctured his heart.
Shortly after the incident, on August 23, 2021, the Guyana Police Force issued a wanted bulletin for Samaroo. He remained on the run for months before being captured in Mibicuri, Black Bush Polder. During the arrest, police also detained his mother for allegedly harboring him.
At sentencing, Defense Attorney Kevin Edmonson urged the court to consider Samaroo’s youth and noted his remorse. A tearful Samaroo apologized in court, saying, “I’m sorry for the people who lost their family… I beg for one more chance to go back on the road.”
Justice Kissoon, however, stressed the gravity of the offense, highlighting the pattern of escalating violence often linked to alcohol abuse. He also underscored the profound impact of Khan’s death on his family—particularly his three sons, who must now grow up without their father.
Along with the custodial sentence, Justice Kissoon ordered Samaroo to undergo anger management therapy and participate in programs addressing alcohol dependency, aiming to support rehabilitation and prevent future violent behavior.
