One person missing after ‘balahoo’ sank in Mazaruni River

Police are investigating a report of a ‘river mishap’ which resulted in the disappearance of an identifiable male (known as ‘Rasta’ or ‘Mark’) of Essequibo Coast (other particulars unknown at this time) which occurred at about 20:40 hrs last night at a falls in Middle Mazaruni River.

Police visited the scene at about 12:00hrs today. Initial investigations revealed that around 20:30 hrs yesterday (Tuesday), Shojhi Roberts, a 32-year-old Ranger of Isseneru Village, Middle Mazaruni River, borrowed the village’s wooden Balahoo boat, which is powered by a 75 Yamaha horsepower outboard engine and later left with Mark Benn and ‘Rasta’ for Apaiqua Landing, located about five minutes away.

Whilst navigating the river near a ‘waterfall’ in the area, the boat collided with a rock causing the occupants to be flung out of the boat into the river. The Balahoo boat sank, and the captain of the boat, along with one of the occupants, Mark Benn, managed to swim to shore. However, ‘Rasta’ was not seen. An alarm was raised, and checks were made in the area for ‘Rasta’, but this effort proved futile.

The matter was reported to the Police and ranks, and villagers formed a search party which is presently ongoing for the missing person.

Shojhi Roberts is in Police custody as the investigation continues.
