Resounding Success Achieved at Leonora Police Youth Camp

A highly fruitful one-day Youth Camp unfolded at the Leonora Track and Field Centre on the West Coast Demerara last Friday, August 25, 2023. This event catered to the members of the Police Youth and Scout Group within the purview of Regional Police Division No.3.

The opening ceremony was gracefully presided over by Assistant Superintendent D. Handy, the Regional Youth and Scout Officer. Gracing the occasion, Assistant Commissioner K. Pareshram, the Regional Commander, extended a warm welcome to the young participants and encouraged them to embrace skills-oriented training programs that would undoubtedly yield future benefits. He emphasized their involvement in the comprehensive range of training and activities facilitated by the Guyana Police Force, highlighting the invaluable opportunity of the FREE Information Technology initiatives available through the Zara Computer Centers in Region 3, situated in Leonora and Parika.

Assistant Superintendent M. Jagnanan, serving as the Regional Traffic Officer, delivered a comprehensive discourse on Road Safety and pertinent traffic-related matters. Topics spanned from the perils of towing individuals using bicycle handles to the significance of donning brightly colored attire for enhanced visibility during nocturnal road activities. Dangers linked with speeding, disregarding speed limits, and the imperative safety precautions for Electric Bikes, encompassing the necessity of bells, brakes, and lights, were thoughtfully conveyed.

In a session conducted by Ms. A. Cort, the Force’s Psychiatrist, insights into Mental Health were profoundly explored. The discourse encompassed causal factors and triggers, coupled with engaging physical activities to translate comprehension into action.

Detective Corporal Causeway meticulously elucidated Summary/Indictable crimes, unraveling intricate aspects of these legal distinctions.

Regional Detective Inspector Da Silva took the stage to illuminate the menace of Drug Abuse and its perilous effects on young lives. He instilled the significance of maintaining distance from such detrimental influences and emphasized resilience against negative peer pressures.

Addressing the rapidly evolving digital landscape, the attendees were enlightened on Cyber Crime, delving into significant sections of the Cyber Crimes Act. Pertinent aspects such as Illegal Access to a Computer (Section 3), the Publication or Transmission of Private Images (Section 16), and the use of computer systems for coercion and harassment (Section 19) were discussed. The implications of breaching the Act, which could result in up to three years of imprisonment, were solemnly underscored.

Woman Detective Corporal Glasgow from the Gender-Based Violence Unit centered her presentation on Sexual Assault and its multidimensional impact, intricately linked to the Sexual Offenses Act Chapter 8:03.

Insightful questions and elucidations for clarity marked the lively interactions that took place throughout these enriching sessions.

Concluding the educational segment, the youth indulged in outdoor recreational pursuits, ranging from cricket to football, while others engaged in skill-enhancement activities like Tie-Dying.

This triumph was realized with invaluable support from key stakeholders, notably Mr. H. Khan and the Chung Pastries Factory.

Commander Pareshram conveyed closing remarks, expressing gratitude to the participating youths and advocating for the continuous nature of such initiatives, echoing the strategic intentions of the Force’s roadmap to nurture bonds, foster unity among groups, and collectively strive for self-improvement.
