In a distressing incident, a 23-year-old Police Constable, Rameshwar Chunilall, stationed at Cove and John Police Station and attached to the Traffic Department, fell victim to an alleged ‘unlawful wounding’ perpetrated by a juvenile fifth-form student. The incident unfolded on Thursday, November 23, 2023, at approximately 15:40 hrs on the public road at Hope, East Coast Demerara.

According to reports, Constable Chunilall was performing traffic duty on Hope Public Road when he observed a scuffle between the juvenile suspect and another student. In an attempt to restore order, Constable Chunilall intervened and successfully halted the altercation. However, the situation took a violent turn when the juvenile suspect, armed with a piece of wood, struck Constable Chunilall on the head, resulting in injuries.

Following the assault, Constable Chunilall was promptly escorted to the Nabaclis Health Center, where he received medical attention before being discharged.

The police have launched an investigation into the incident, with the juvenile suspect now in custody to aid in further inquiries. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and authorities are working to determine the circumstances that led to the assault on the on-duty police rank.

The incident underscores the risks faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty and raises questions about the safety and security measures in place to protect them. The police force is expected to conduct a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served and to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. The well-being of the injured constable and the broader implications for maintaining law and order within the community will undoubtedly be focal points of the ongoing investigation.
