Permanent Secretary and Ministry Team Survey Lusignan Prison Facilities

News Update

Andre Inshan Ally, the newly appointed Permanent Secretary, led a delegation from the Ministry of Home Affairs, joined by Director of Prisons, Nicklon Elliot, in a comprehensive visit to the Lusignan Prison Complex today. This visit was a part of the Permanent Secretary’s initial review of ongoing capital projects within the prison system.

During the visit, the Permanent Secretary was guided through a thorough walkthrough of the entire Lusignan Prison Estate, gaining insight into its various facilities.

Notably, the new female prison received attention as well, as it is poised to become the new home for female inmates previously held at the New Amsterdam prison.

Among the areas of focus, the Permanent Secretary closely examined the advancements in the prison’s vocational school. This educational initiative aims to equip inmates with skills that can aid in their rehabilitation and reintegration into society, aligning with the Home Affairs Minister’s ‘fresh start’ initiative. The latter seeks to foster smoother transitions for inmates as they return to their communities and families.

In addition, the Permanent Secretary meticulously reviewed the infirmary annex, overhead water storage tanks, and water treatment plants, underscoring the importance of maintaining robust infrastructure to support the prison complex.

This visit symbolizes the commitment of the Ministry of Home Affairs to closely monitor and enhance prison facilities and programs for the betterment of inmates and the broader community.
