Regional Division #2 law enforcement authorities are currently conducting an inquiry into an alleged “River Mishap” that unfolded around 2:40 PM this afternoon, Thursday. The incident occurred within the waters of the Pomeroon River.
Preliminary inquiries have revealed that the incident involved two watercrafts. Andel Garraway, a 23-year-old licensed boat captain, was operating a wooden Balahoo measuring 21 feet in length and 8 feet in width. The vessel was equipped with a robust 250 Hp Yamaha outboard engine. Garraway was navigating from the Charity Wharf to Grant Phoenix Park in the Lower Pomeroon River.
The mishap occurred when Garraway’s vessel collided with another wooden Balahoo. The second vessel, piloted by Regan Rodriguez, a 40-year-old farmer residing in Charity Housing Scheme, was smaller, measuring 14 feet in length and 4 feet in width. This vessel was powered by a 5 Hp Yamaha engine and was proceeding North within the Pomeroon River.
According to Garraway, who promptly reported the incident to the Charity Police Station, he was traveling South on the river when the collision transpired. The impact resulted in the smaller boat operated by Regan Rodriguez capsizing and Rodriguez falling into the Pomeroon River.
Garraway asserted that he was unaware of the presence of the smaller boat and only felt the impact. Upon surveying the water after the collision, Garraway noted the presence of a hat and observed the smaller boat with its engine in a tilted position.
In response to the incident, a joint search operation has been launched with the primary goal of locating and recovering Regan Rodriguez.
Presently, Andel Garraway is in Police custody, extending his cooperation to authorities as they proceed with their investigation into the circumstances of the mishap.
