In a significant stride towards enhancing living conditions, the Hinterland Housing Programme has provided newfound security and comfort to ten families in Kokerite, Region One. The families, previously at constant risk of flooding, were handed the keys to their new elevated timber homes during a simple ceremony on Saturday.

Minister of Housing and Water, Hon. Collin Croal, and Permanent Secretary, Mr. Bishram Kuppen, led the ceremony, emphasizing the government’s commitment to addressing housing needs in vulnerable communities. The 20×25 feet, 3-bedroom units come equipped with a trestle and tank for rainwater harvesting, along with external sanitary facilities.
Present at the event were Regional Vice-Chairperson, Ms. Annansha Peters, and Senior Hinterland and Building Works Engineer at the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA), Mr. Cy Rodrigues. The collaborative effort between the village council and residents played a crucial role in selecting the ten families most in need of permanent relocation from flood-prone areas.

Last year, during a flood relief exercise in Kokerite, Minister Croal pledged to construct these homes, recognizing the challenges faced by the 34 families along the riverbank. The homes’ construction utilized materials sourced locally within the Region, and community members contributed to the building process.

Expressing their joy and contentment, the families highlighted the enhanced safety these homes bring to their households. In a further effort to uplift the community, Minister Croal and his team distributed 33 solar panels to households in Kokerite on the same day, showcasing a holistic approach to addressing the needs of the residents.
