Guyana Prison Service Advances Toward Non-Lethal Weapons Adoption

News Update

In a significant step towards enhancing safety and security, four personnel from the Guyana Prison Service (GPS) recently completed a comprehensive two-day training program focused on the utilization of non-lethal weapons.

This specialized training, primarily centered on “Energy Weapon Instructor” techniques, welcomed the participation of Cadet Officer David Wilson, Principal Officers Aklem Alexander Colwyn Thompson, and Christopher Elias. They were joined by eight additional members from the Guyana Police Force, collectively making it a robust training cohort.

The comprehensive training program was effectively delivered by Queensway Security and led by instructors Manny Malgor and Jose Ramirez, both from the Indian River State College.

In recognition of their successful completion of the training, each participant was presented with a certificate of participation during the graduation ceremony. The Acting Commissioner of Police, Mr. Clifton Hicken, officiated this commendable occasion.

Director of Prisons, Nicklon Elliot, conveyed that the overarching objective of the Prison Service is to transition towards the implementation of non-lethal devices. These non-lethal weapons are engineered to significantly reduce the likelihood of causing fatal harm or severe, permanent injuries compared to traditional weapons like knives and firearms using live ammunition.

In line with this commitment, the Prison Service has already acquired non-lethal devices, paving the way for their integration within the prison system. This move signifies a dedicated effort to enhance safety, minimize harm, and uphold security standards within the prison environment.
