Tragedy struck the fishing community when the lifeless body of Mahendra Jaipal, a fisherman from Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, was discovered along the Eversham, Corentyne foreshore on Friday. Jaipal had been reported missing after encountering difficulties during a fishing trip with fellow crew members several days ago.

The fishing boat, identified as SK 1798, faced complications in the Corentyne River on Sunday, prompting a distress call to its owner, Totaram Ramdharry. According to Ramdharry, the boat’s engine failed, leading to water rapidly entering the vessel. Responding to the call, Ramdharry and a team set out to provide assistance.
Upon reaching the location, they found three men from the fishing crew along with an icebox. The crew reported holding onto the icebox for survival. However, Jaipal, who was also clutching the icebox, lost his grip, and despite efforts to locate him, he disappeared into the water.
The three rescued men were brought to the police in Nickerie and later to Springlands. The search for Jaipal continued, revealing the wreckage of the boat, estimated to incur losses of approximately $11 million.
Regional Commander Shivpersaud Bacchus confirmed that Jaipal’s lifeless body washed up on the Eversham foreshore. Relatives positively identified the body, and a post-mortem examination is scheduled to determine the cause of death.
The fishing community mourns the loss of Jaipal, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of their profession and the challenges faced at sea.
