Tragic Workplace Collision at Aurora Gold Mines Under Investigation by Ministry of Labour

In a devastating incident at the Aurora Gold Mines (AGM), Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), the Ministry of Labour’s Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Department is investigating a fatal workplace collision.

On Saturday, November 18, 2023, around 10:10 hrs, a collision occurred involving 36-year-old Mr. Joseph Licorish of West Watooka and 41-year-old Mr. Nigel Denny of Shirley Field Ridley Square, Georgetown. Both were truck operators at AGM and were working when their respective vehicles collided.

Licorish, driving a motor truck (TL-001, was descending a hill fully loaded with stones in the tray near an open mining pit area at Aurora in the Cuyuni-Mazaruni District. The collision happened with Denny’s truck, TL-19, which was ascending the hill around a slight bend and also fully loaded with stones in the tray.

Following the AGM’s reports of the incident by the OSH Act, the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Officer, Mr. Naipaul Persaud, initiated investigations into the matter. The Ministry of Labour expresses heartfelt sympathy to the grieving relatives, co-workers, and friends of the deceased.

The Ministry takes this opportunity to underscore the importance of good safety and health practices in the workplace, emphasizing the need to prevent incidents that can result in the loss of lives. Investigations into the tragic collision at Aurora Gold Mines are currently ongoing.
