The Honourable Pauline Sukhai from the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs led a mission to the villages of Monkey Mountain and Taruka in Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni) to fulfill commitments and strengthen Amerindian communities. On Saturday, a total of 285 solar photovoltaic systems were delivered, marking a significant step in enhancing energy accessibility for residents.
In Taruka, 35 households received solar panels, and a number of ministry-funded initiatives got underway. The village also benefited from a $1.5 million solar system, financed through the ministry’s Presidential Grant program. Additionally, the government gave the village a tractor and trailer, which aided in its development.

In Monkey Mountain, 250 households became beneficiaries of the solar panel program. The ministry’s commitment extended beyond energy solutions, with the commissioning of a $2 million women’s sewing group center and a $3 million multipurpose building. Furthermore, the community received a $1.9 million all-terrain vehicle (ATV), enhancing mobility and connectivity.

During the visit, Minister Sukhai addressed various issues related to education, agriculture, and health and dispelled misinformation peddled by the Amerindian People’s Association (APA). The ministry’s team, including Project Coordinator Besham Ramsaywack, Management Development Officer Eliza Bascome, and Community Development Officers Kurt Perreira and Anthonio George, played a vital role in facilitating the successful execution of these initiatives. Regional Chairman Headley Pio was also present, reinforcing the collaborative effort between the ministry and regional authorities to uplift Amerindian communities.
