Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo has initiated legal proceedings against Byron Mackintosh, filing a libel suit in response to a Facebook post wherein Mackintosh alleged that the Vice President had tampered with his car’s brakes with the intent of causing harm.

In the filed claim at the High Court in Georgetown on Thursday, Jagdeo seeks general damages exceeding $5 million from Mackintosh. Additionally, the claimant is pursuing exemplary and aggravating damages for the alleged libelous statements made during a live audio/video broadcast on Mackintosh’s Facebook page, which boasts a substantial following of 30,000.
Jagdeo contends that during the broadcast, Mackintosh accused him of orchestrating a plot to end his life. According to Jagdeo’s lawyer, Sanjeev Datadin, the words used implied that the Vice President was directly involved in sabotaging Mackintosh’s vehicle, specifically by cutting the brakes, with the malicious intention of causing the defendant’s death.
Datadin, in a Statement of Claim, emphasized that Jagdeo is a widely recognized public figure, garnering praise globally. The contested publications, Datadin argued, have tarnished Jagdeo’s reputation, causing significant distress and humiliation.
Concerned that Mackintosh may persist in making false and defamatory statements unless restrained, Jagdeo’s legal team is seeking a High Court order preventing the defendant, as well as his employees, agents, and representatives, from posting or publishing similar defamatory remarks in the future.
Furthermore, Jagdeo is seeking an order instructing Mackintosh to promptly remove all social media posts containing the alleged false and defamatory words from his Facebook page. The Vice President also requests costs, interest, an order directing Mackintosh to withdraw and apologize for the false statements, and any other appropriate orders deemed necessary by the court.
