In a suspected targeted attack on Monday evening, an 18-year-old man fell victim to a cellphone robbery valued at $60,000 at Market Street, Kitty, Georgetown.
Shahid Aze Mohamed, who is from Farm, East Bank Demerara, described the incident to the News Room, stating that two motorcycle-riding assailants ambushed him as he was returning to his uncle’s house on Barr Street, Kitty, on Monday at around 21:15 hrs.
Mohamed had taken some pictures with his Samsung A03 cellphone while watching fireworks earlier that night with a male relative. Suddenly, the two attackers, armed with a pair of scissors each, confronted them.

Despite the presence of the relative, the thieves specifically targeted Mohamed, leaving his companion untouched.
Recalling the ordeal, Mohamed said, “Out of nowhere, these two guys cornered us, and I didn’t think it was a robbery because of the way they approached. I didn’t think it was to rob, and then they attacked. I tried to hold onto my phone and tell them to leave me alone.”
Mohamed suspects that the assailants intentionally singled him out and had been tailing him.
“They pulled out two scissors and tried to stab me with the scissors, but I held the scissors from him and broke it, which fell on the ground, and the other one tried to come and stab me.”
Despite having approximately $5,000 in his possession, the thieves only made off with the phone. The entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras, and Mohamed promptly reported the matter to the Kitty Police Station.
