President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali announced a pledge of $25,000 to aid Jamaica’s recovery efforts during the opening of the 2025 Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) Senior Championships on November 26.
At a reception dinner for athletes and officials held at the Royal International Hotel, President Ali emphasized the importance of regional unity and shared responsibility. His government took over hosting duties for the tournament after Hurricane Melissa severely impacted Jamaica, complicating the event’s organization.
“Guyana stands firmly with Jamaica as it rebuilds from recent challenges,” President Ali stated, recalling the extensive destruction he saw during his recent visit to Kingston. He shared that Guyana is committed to repairing 200 roofs, fixing a major school, and a police station while continuing to send shipments of essential supplies.
“We are all part of one family in this region,” he affirmed, linking the $25,000 support to the spirit of solidarity embodied in CASA.
Praise for Guyana Squash Association
The President lauded the Guyana Squash Association (GSA), calling it “extraordinary” due to its strong leadership and commitment to building a culture of pride and partnership. Highlighting the sport’s rapid growth in the country, he noted significant investments in squash facilities, with ongoing efforts to distribute equipment to schools and community centers.
“We’re investing in courts across the country, and we now have people in the hinterland playing squash,” he said, noting that full facilities will soon be available in those regions.
New National Squash Complex
President Ali revealed plans for a new national squash complex, which is set to be completed shortly after the tournament. This facility will be fully air-conditioned and include accommodations for athletes during training exercises, aiming to serve both tournaments and the broader regional community.
Reflecting on the evolution of squash across the Caribbean, he praised CASA for promoting unity and excellence in the sport and commended all involved for building a robust tradition.
Guyana: A Premier Sports Destination
He expressed that Guyana’s investments in sports facilities, programming, and talent development have positioned the nation as a premier sports destination in the Americas. He noted the significance of sports to Guyana’s evolving economy, stating, “Sports is a major component of the orange economy.”
As he recognized the efforts of officials, referees, volunteers, and supporters, President Ali officially declared the championship open, encouraging participants to make history and strengthen the Caribbean family.
The CASA 2025 Championships is scheduled to run from November 23 to 30 at the National Racquet Centre on Woolford Avenue, Georgetown.
