Tragic Unity Road Accident Claims Lives of Three, Leaving Two Hospitalized

News Update

Authorities are currently investigating a devastating accident that unfolded around 10:04 PM last night on Unity public road, East Coast Demerara. This incident has led to the loss of three lives and has left two others in critical condition, sparking a thorough inquiry into its causes.

The collision involved several vehicles, primarily a motorcycle operated by 21-year-old Elijah Pellew (now deceased) from Lot 38 Unity Mahaica, with 21-year-old Raymond Rose (now deceased) as the pillion rider from Lot 57 Supply Mahaica. Also part of the incident was a motor car bearing license plate PGG 9823, both owned and driven by 21-year-old Balram Thuknauth, hailing from Lot 9 Huntley Mahaicony, ECD. The occupants of this car were 19-year-old Shawn Persaud (now deceased) from Huntley Mahaicony, ECD, and 19-year-old Baskar Ramdeen from Lot 228 Back Street Better Hope, ECD.

The collision also involved a second motor car (PAD 171) under the ownership and operation of 37-year-old Keyon Stoute, residing in Lot 69 Logwood Enmore, ECD. Additionally, a Motor Lorry (BMS 2) owned and driven by 51-year-old Bhupaul Bhawandas from Lot 140 B Quamina Street, Georgetown, played a part in the incident.

Initial investigations have revealed that motor car PGG 9823 was traveling eastward on the northern driving lane of Unity public road. In contrast, motor car PAD 171 was progressing on the opposite driving lane behind motor Lorry BMS 2. According to the driver of motor car PAD 171, the motorcycle, which lacked proper lighting, overtook his vehicle and subsequently collided with the right side of motor car PGG 9823. This collision caused motor car PGG 9823 to spin twice and veer into the path of motor car PAD 171.

In an attempt to avoid further collision, the driver of motor car PAD 171 swerved left, ultimately landing in the southern driving lane parapet. Regrettably, the impact resulted in the ejection of both the motorcyclist and the pillion rider. The two were propelled into the right side of Motor Lorry BMS 2 before falling onto the roadway, leading to severe injuries.

Meanwhile, the occupant seated in the front right side of motor car PGG 9823 was pinned as a consequence of the collision, while the rear seat occupant sustained injuries across their body.

In response to the accident, Good Samaritans rushed to the scene, assisting in transporting the motorcyclist, the pillion rider, and the occupants of motor car PGG 9823 to the Georgetown Public Hospital. Tragically, upon arrival, the motorcyclist, pillion rider, and one of the occupants from motor car PGG 9823 were pronounced dead by an attending physician.

The occupant from the back seat of motor car PGG 9823, who had suffered a punctured spleen, received medical attention from a doctor and was subsequently admitted to the hospital. The driver of motor car PGG 9823, showing signs of a cerebral concussion, was taken under medical care at the Mahicony Cottage Hospital.

Presently, the drivers of motor car PAD 171 and Motor Lorry BMS 2 are in police custody as authorities continue their comprehensive investigation into the matter.
