Finance Ministry Rubbishes Claims of Dead Persons Being Registered for Cash Grant

News Update

News Source Guyana : In response to allegations circulating on social media that deceased individuals have been registered to receive the Government’s one-off $100,000 cash grant, the Ministry of Finance has categorically dismissed these claims as baseless.

The Ministry emphasized that the grant system includes multiple layers of controls designed to prevent the processing of deceased individuals. “Eligible citizens must physically present themselves both at the time of registration and when collecting the cash grant. This measure ensures that only living, eligible individuals are processed,” the Ministry explained in a statement.

The Ministry reassured the public that the registration system is managed with a strict security infrastructure. A high-level technical team, consisting of IT specialists, auditors, statisticians, and accountants, meticulously scrutinizes records to ensure that all eligibility criteria are met. These criteria include:

Submission of a valid ID card or passport.
Age verification, confirming that the registrant is 18 years or older as of January 1, 2025.
Capturing a photograph of each registrant.
Furthermore, controls are in place during the distribution of cheques. Beneficiaries must present a valid ID or passport to collect their payments. At this stage, distribution officers take a photograph of the beneficiary and compare it with the image on the signature sheet prior to handing over the payment.

The Finance Ministry underscored that it would be a criminal offense for anyone to accept payment for which they are not eligible. They warned that despite the robust measures implemented, individuals found attempting to cheat the system will face legal action.
