In a proactive initiative aimed at enhancing road safety awareness, Sergeant Hermerding and Corporal Kadir from the Mahaica Police Station’s Traffic Department are spearheading the revival of ‘School Road Safety Patrols’ at Cane Grove Primary School and several other educational institutions along the East Coast of Demerara. This revitalization is part of the broader road safety awareness month’s exercise.

The ongoing project, aligned with the School Road Safety Patrol guidelines, involves the training of teachers and students who will actively participate in the patrols. These patrols are strategically positioned not on the main thoroughfares but on the ‘access roads’ in front of schools within the Police Division.

Participants in the patrols have been equipped with Reflector Patrol Belts and Red Stop School Crossing signs, essential tools to alert motorists to exercise caution when school children are in the vicinity. Teachers will play a pivotal role in guiding the students during these safety patrols.

The training sessions focused on educating students on recognizing traffic safety, the proper use of pedestrian crossings, correct road usage, kurb-drill, the significance of Pedestrian Crossing, safe pedal cycling, and the importance of wearing light-colored clothing, especially at night.

Several schools, including Beterverwagting Secondary, Beterverwagting Primary, Mahaica Primary, Helena Primary, Lancaster Secondary, Hope Secondary, Ann’s Grove Secondary, Enmore Primary School, Good-Hope Secondary, Lusignan Primary, Strathspey Primary, and Enterprise Primary School, have benefitted from this revitalized initiative.

This project not only contributes to the overarching goals of Road Safety Month but also aligns with its theme: ‘Road Safety is not a slogan, it’s a way of life, Respect the. ‘ The collaboration between law enforcement and educational institutions underscores the commitment to instilling road safety practices as an integral part of the daily lives of students, fostering a safer environment for their journeys to and from school.
