A 37-year-old woman, who is a single mother, displayed remarkable courage when she shielded her eight-year-old daughter from harm after their wooden dwelling collapsed on Thursday night.
The incident unfolded around 10:30 PM at Cow Dam, situated in Bath Settlement, on the West Coast of Berbice.
Kamlawattie Ramnauth recounted that shortly after shutting her door, she heard distinct “crackling” sounds, immediately realizing that it was the house giving way.
Ramnauth further explained that she had resided in the house for a span of nine years. However, she became a single parent two years ago, following her separation from her husband.
The woman, who sustains her livelihood by vending plantain chips, eggball, and other food items while using a bicycle, shared with the News Room that she incurred only a minor wrist injury while her daughter emerged from the incident unscathed.

“Everything collapsed, and we cannot re-enter to assess the extent of the damage or salvage any belongings due to the ongoing structural instability,” she divulged.
Ramnauth and her daughter sought refuge at a neighbor’s residence for the remainder of the night.
Expressing her openness to any assistance for the reconstruction of her home, she extended an invitation for support. Interested individuals can get in touch with Ramnauth via the contact numbers 652-1780 or 681-4787 (Pandit).
