In a distressing incident at Golden Grove Secondary School, East Coast Demerara, a 16-year-old student named Jomal Reid has suffered severe brain damage after being struck to the head with a cricket bat by another student. The incident unfolded during a confrontation at the school on Thursday afternoon.
Jomal Reid, a fifth form student, is currently hospitalized at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC). His aunt, Pheona Carroll, revealed that the young boy has experienced a loss of movement to the left side of his body.

“His entire left side body, the left eye closed down, he could only smile halfway to the right alone, he cannot feel, he cannot touch on the left side,” Carroll expressed.
The confrontation ensued after squibs (firecrackers) were thrown outside the school compound. According to Carroll, the alleged perpetrator had made threats the day before the incident, posting on WhatsApp that someone would die the next day. The motive for the attack remains unclear.
“My nephew was standing with some other friends, and this boy came from behind him and lashed him to his head with the bat, and my nephew fell to the floor and blacked out,” Carroll explained.
Jomal regained consciousness at the Nabaclis Health Centre, where the attending doctor indicated serious brain injuries. He was subsequently transferred to GPHC and underwent emergency surgery.
Jomal Reid, described as a non-troublemaking and diligent student, is currently in stable but critical condition. The Ministry of Education and the Police Force are reportedly investigating the incident.
“We need justice,” emphasized the distraught aunt. The community and educational authorities are awaiting further developments as investigations unfold.
